ADNOC Offshore Presented One of HOT’s Advanced Technologies at ADIPEC

Hiroshi Uematsu, Senior Reservoir Engineer with ADNOC Offshore, demonstrated how to arrive within a short time at a high quality history match for a large Middle Eastern carbonate oil reservoir with long production history and numerous wells.

By applying SenEx, HOT’s advanced assisted history matching tool, ADNOC Offshore was able to achieve a technical sound well-by-well history match with less than 20 (!) simulation runs ONLY!

What usually takes months, has been achieved in a few days.
Another proof of the outstanding performance of SenEx.

Petroleum Economics, Business and Decision Making (PBM02)
3-6 December 2018 (5 days) – CONFIRMED!
** Last-Minute Spots available! **

Engineers, geoscientists and economists perform technical work to support the “business” objectives of the organisation they work for (corporation, government). It is therefore important that they understand that “business” because it will influence the judgements they make. Economic evaluations provide the main source of the organisation’s information by which investment and operational decisions are made regarding the most effective use of resources. It is through these decisions corporate value is being created (or destroyed). Read more…

SenEx Colleague Presented at EAGE ECMOR, Barcelona!

Daniel Awofodu from our SenEx Support Team attended EAGE ECMOR conference, 3-6 September 2018 in Barcelona, Spain, which focused on the mathematics of oil recovery and was attended by reservoir engineers, data scientists, mathematicians, PhD students and professionals from both academia and industry. The conference covered the mathematical aspects of physical modelling, linear solvers, risk and uncertainty, uncertainty quantification, data assimilation, reservoir geomechanics etc.

Daniel presented a paper titled “Revealing Hidden Reservoir Features During History Matching Using An Adjoint Method”. A competition was held in the conference to find the best method capable of maximizing net present value (NPV). Participants used a wide range of methods such as the CMA-ES, Stochastic gradient, GA, EnKF and the Adjoint method. It was noteworthy that the highest NPV was achieved by SINTEF (the developers of MATLAB), and was also based on the Adjoint approach, just like SenEx, our assisted history matching software, which was utilized in Daniel’s work.

We remain proud that SenEx continues to be unrivalled in the world of assisted history matching tools.

HOT Participation at the First School on Sandstone Diagenesis at the FAU University in Erlangen, Germany

Sharon Tiainen and Dr Chris Cubitt, HOT’s principal reservoir geologists, attended the First School on Sandstone Diagenesis at the FAU University in Erlangen, Germany.  Chris and Sharon, along with ExxonMobil’s Dr William Heins and leading academics Dr Luca Caracciolo (from FAU) and Dr Saturnina Henares and Prof Gert Jan Weltje  (from KU Lueven) were the key note speakers.  Drs Linda Bonnel and Rob Lander (of Touchstone Fame) presented a workshop on diagenetic modelling and reservoir quality prediction.

The school brought together representatives from both industry and academia with a vision to share their collective experience and discuss both traditional and the latest concepts and developments in clastic diagenesis.  Importantly the school was well attended by the next generation of reservoir geologists, who presented highlights from their collective PhDs and post-docs in an entertaining ‘elevator pitch’ style.

The emphasis of the school was on understanding controlling processes on clastic diagenesis, their knock-on effects and how we can best model these inputs.  Our collective aim, by understanding controls, we can better predict reservoir quality.  In this context, HOT’s innovative drill cuttings analysis work – recall diagenesis studies are typically undertaken on relatively rare conventional core – was very well received and seen as a value-add that is often under-utilised by both researchers and industry.

Sensitivity Explorer 2.1 (SenEx 2.1) Release

We are pleased to announce that Version 2.1 of SenEx has been released!

SenEx, our next-generation assisted history matching tool, is as fast, flexible and forward-thinking as a cheetah. It speeds up your history matching exercise significantly while dramatically improving the quality of your history match. Sensitivities are computed analytically, reducing the number of simulation runs by a factor of 10 for mature fields: What usually takes months is achieved in days. Because SenEx works at the grid block level, it eliminates the need for box multipliers, leading to geologically sound and consistent models.

The focus of Version 2.1 has been on adding new features and performance improvement:

  • API tracking support
  • JFUNC support
  • Analytical aquifer parameters
  • Cross-regional transmissibility multipliers
  • Performance improvement of dual porosity / permeability models
  • Improved support of Corey model parameter modification
  • Well bar plotting improvements
  • Panel for property change comparison

Interested? Watch our demo video to see how fast you can progress with your history match:
