Introduction to Petroleum Engineering (INT01)

    Description

This course develops an understanding of the technologies and applications of modern petroleum engineering. It addresses engineering issues ranging from initial involvement in exploration to production optimisation challenges and energy transition aspects. It is considered a primary course prior to specialised training programs.

    Course Level: Foundation / Skill
    Duration: 5 days
    Instructor: Gioia Falcone

Designed for you, if you are...

    • A manager, engineer, geologist, geophysicist, chemist or physicist working in E&P or for a service company with limited background in petroleum engineering

    How we build your confidence

With a sequential approach to field exploration, appraisal and development, you will move from the static characterisation of the reservoir to the dynamic characterisation of fluid flow through the entire production system, in order to appreciate the role of petroleum engineering within the larger picture of E&P activities.
You will then be introduced to how the technologies and expertise that the oil & gas sector has developed for the exploration and production of hydrocarbon systems are directly complementary to those required for the energy transition.
The course includes class discussions of field problems and short films.

    The benefits from attending

By the end of the course you will feel confident in your understanding of:

    • The fundamental concepts involved in exploration and petroleum engineering activities
    • The wide range of exploration geology, drilling and production techniques used by the petroleum industry
    • The immediate synergies between oil and gas skills and those required for the net-zero carbon energy transition

    Topics

    • Petroleum geology and reservoir types
    • Tools for exploration and field appraisal
    • Reservoir fluid and rock properties
    • Drilling and completions
    • Subsurface fluid flow
    • From hydrocarbons in place to production
    • Determination of recovery factor and resource assessment
    • Production, injection and storage engineering for different geo-energy applications (geothermal energy production, underground thermal energy storage, carbon capture utilisation and storage, compressed air storage, hydrogen storage, geological disposal of radioactive waste)

    Customer Feedback

"Good overview of a wide range of topics." - Portfolio Expert at OMV

"I liked the way of discussion and explanation of the topics" - Project Engineer at OMV
