Depth Conversion and Seismic Velocity Model: An Applied Workshop (GPH08)

  • 11-13 September 20173 daysVienna, AustriaCourse Fee: 2490 EUR + VAT

Description

The objective of this course is to deliver a practical understanding of seismic velocity and depth conversion. In addition you will learn about the typical velocity types and their meanings, understand and compare the methods of velocity representation and use them for depth conversion.

Course Level: Basic to Intermediate

Designed for you, if you are...

  • A graduate or new hired geologist, geophysicist or seismic interpreter involved in the exploration team, keen to understand the theory of velocity models and how to convert seismic data from time to depth domain properly and in accordance with geological contexts

How we build your confidence

  • Practical paper-based workshop with exercises and case study examples
  • Discussion of different velocity models and their use and suitability
  • Case histories that demonstrate the importance of a good depth conversion in terms of reservoir analysis

The benefits from attending

By the end of the course you will feel confident in your understanding of:

  • Velocity types and their meaning
  • Building a consistent velocity model
  • Depth conversion and its importance in terms of seismic interpretation and petroleum exploration

Topics

Introduction
  • Concepts of wave propagation and rock physics
  • Their importance on seismic velocity
  • Heterogeneity of velocity
  • Velocity analysis
  • Time migration, theory and fundamental concepts
  • Types of velocity, velocity gradient

Applied workshop
  • Depth conversion tools and vertical t-d conversion (picking, posting and timing)
  • Depth conversion tools and vertical t-d conversion (fixed velocity and velocity function methods - contouring)
  • Migration, depth conversion tools and vertical t-d conversion (velocity map and layer cake methods - contouring)
  • Comparison, discussion, quality control, geologic and geophysical parameters that affect t-d conversion
