Diagenesis of Sedimentary Rocks (GEO82)

    Description

This advanced course provides a comprehensive overview of the diagenetic evolution of sedimentary rocks and its impact on reservoir quality. The course combines theoretical concepts with practical petrographic interpretation of siliciclastic, carbonate, evaporitic and siliceous rocks, emphasising the recognition of diagenetic features and their relationship with porosity, permeability and fluid flow. Special attention is devoted to the interpretation of diagenetic processes using thin sections, core photographs and high-resolution digital images. Through numerous practical exercises and case studies, participants will learn how to recognise and interpret the main diagenetic products and reconstruct the burial and diagenetic history of sedimentary successions relevant to hydrocarbon exploration and production.

    Course Level: Skill / Advanced
    Duration: 5 days

Designed for you, if you are...

    • A geologist, petrophysicist, reservoir geologist, or reservoir engineer involved in hydrocarbon exploration and field development
    • Someone interested in understanding how diagenetic processes control reservoir quality and heterogeneity
    • A professional seeking practical experience in the petrographic recognition and interpretation of diagenetic features in sedimentary rocks

    How we build your confidence

    • Comprehensive overview of sedimentary petrography and diagenetic principles
    • Integration of petrographic observations with reservoir characterisation
    • Step-by-step interpretation of diagenetic processes from thin sections and core material
    • Microscope sessions and digital image interpretation exercises focused on identifying cements, dissolution, replacement, compaction, recrystallization and fracturing
    • Case studies illustrating the evolution of reservoir properties during burial
    • Daily workshops and discussion sessions designed to strengthen interpretation skills and promote independent petrographic analysis
