Description

This 4-day field trip in northwestern Sicily will provide the basics of carbonate reservoir characterisation in the field, through spectacular exposures, quarry visits and seismic-scale outcrops. The main aim is to describe and illustrate the geological and structural controls on carbonate reservoirs.
The field trip focuses on the main sedimentological characteristics of different carbonate reservoirs, including facies distributions and their spatial relationships, coupled with the role of fracturing (vertical and horizontal). The influence of fractures on reservoir behaviour and their structural context will be discussed.
Emphasis is placed on the seismic-scale aspects of carbonate reservoirs and their correlation with field outcrops. The role of permeability and anisotropy in controlling fluid flow within the reservoir will be addressed using natural examples.
A selection of outcrops of shallow-water carbonates displaying significant structural and stratigraphic complexity will be examined, highlighting key factors that influence reservoir heterogeneity.
At the end of this field trip, participants will be able to describe carbonate reservoirs at different scales, starting from rock textures and facies associations, followed by sedimentary bodies and stratigraphic-structural macro-architectures.

Topics

Day 1
  • The first day field trip will be devoted to the Mesozoic carbonates from the Palermo Mountains
  • Stop 1.1 will show the Upper Triassic carbonate succession of the Panormide Platform at Cozzo di Lupo (Monte Cuccio area) and illustrate the reef to back-reef lagoon facies relationships and transition
  • Practical exercise
  • Packed lunch in the field
  • Stop 1.2 at the Monte Gallo Quarry (Palermo Mts) will illustrate the interference between shallow carbonates, unconformity, and deep-seated tectonic structures
  • Stop 1.3 (optional): Rudist carbonates and build-up in a Cretaceous succession

Day 2
  • From Palermo the excursion will reach about 100 km westward along the Tyrrhenian coast, the San Vito lo Capo Peninsula (Trapani Mts.)
  • Stops 2.1 to 2.3 will take place at Mt. Sparagio, close to the amazing San Vito playa, to show the evolution and facies architecture into a Cretaceous carbonate slope
  • Comparison between km-scale outcrops, forming the Sparagio Anticline (field analogue) and the quarries inside the mountain
  • Stop 2.4 will be focused on the structural pattern and deformation of the Trapanese carbonates
  • Practical exercise
  • Stop 2.5: Strada dei Marmi (marble road) facies types and cyclic arrangement in a peritidal zone of an Upper Triassic carbonate platform
  • Promenade on San Vito Playa, to discuss present day carbonate systems

Day 3
  • The day is dedicated to the complex interplay between stratigraphical and structural features, especially between deep seated and shallow seated deformations in carbonates
  • Stop 3.1 near the village of Piana degli Albanesi, will focus on Mesozoic tectonics and facies evolution in the Kumeta drowned carbonate platform. Oil seep and hardgrounds
  • Stop 3.2 Panoramic view of the spectacular field analogue of Kumeta ridge, discussion using seismic and well data, analysis, and classification in carbonate reservoir
  • Typical Sicilian lunch experience in Kumeta field restaurant
  • Stop 3.3 Practical activities (restoration, stratigraphic and tectonic evolution) on the carbonates cropping out in the Piana degli Albanesi Gorge
  • Stop 3.4 Neptunian dikes in Maranfusa carbonate platform, vertical and horizontal hydraulic barrier, exercise
  • Stop 3.5 (optional) panoramic view of the impressive Rocca Busambra Ridge

Day 4
  • Stop 4.1 Alcamo travertine quarry, the role of continental carbonates
  • Stop 4.2 Segesta archaeological site, calcarenites and clastic/evaporitic carbonates, short visit of the Greek temple
  • Stop 4.3 will be focused on the Miocene-Quaternary succession of Paceco calcarenites, assemblage of dune and relationship with tectonic event
  • Exercise and simulation on fluid flow in a clastic carbonate reservoir
  • Stop 4.4 (optional): Succession of Erice site
