Description

This course gives a systematic presentation of fundamental models and theories in petrophysics - focused on reservoir rocks and petrophysical applications - and is designed for geoscientists with some basic background in petrophysics in a more empirical formulation.

This interactive training course will feature
  • A brief refreshing presentation of petrophysical key properties (e.g. porosity, saturation) and their correlation with measured parameters (e.g. resistivity, wave velocities)
  • Systematic presentation of fundamental model concepts (simple averaging models, Hashin bounds, sphere pack models, capillary models, inclusion models) and their assumptions and conditions for application)
  • Demonstration of various models (using practical excel exercises); application on real data sets
  • Calculation of selected interpretation charts and templates
  • Discussion of preferred possibilities of implementation in practical algorithms

How we build your confidence

This course will give a presentation of fundamental model concepts and the formulation of final equations using prepared Microsoft Excel-worksheets. You will then discuss the function of the individual input parameters with respect to an integrated rock characterisation. On real data sets different models are applied and evaluated.

The course is based on the textbook and implemented Excel worksheets written by the instructor: Physical Properties of Rocks – Fundamentals and Principles of Petrophysics, 2nd Edition, Schön, J.H., 2015, Elsevier B.V., Amsterdam.

This textbook gives the detailed description, primary references and some additional aspects of application and implementation in interpretation techniques. Textbook and all Excel worksheets are part of the course material for each participant.
